Galectin modulation of excitatory transmission and neuronal function
2012 Seed Grant
Geoffrey Swanson, Ph.D.
Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Biological Chemistry
Northwestern University
Using his 2012 Seed Grant, Dr. Swanson will determine how galectins, a family of proteins secreted by many types of cells, alter normal brain function through specific interactions with signaling molecules in neurons. Galectins also are secreted at high levels by cancer cells, including the type found in the brain, but how they influence neurons near the tumor site is unknown.
